The main reason for the construction of this extraordinary fortified dam can be found in the desire to guarantee the impenetrability of the western borders, to defend the city of Veronaand to ensure connections with the Veronese territories recently added to the Visconti dominions. A study of the scarce documentation of the period seems to confirm that Visconti's initial project was to reinforce the water border between the Mincio and the Adige.
As it was joined to the castle above, it brought the overall length of the "Serraglio" to about 17 kilometres.
Every year in June the Festa del Nodo d'Amore (Love Knot Festival) is now held on this bridge.
